The other day I came across an article that promoted the idea that NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) become a global alliance and that it operate on a worldwide basis. In other words, to expand its sphere of intervention by signing up as full members other countries outside the North Atlantic (i.e. Europe and North America). And still have the basis of ‘one for all and all for one’. If any outside country goes into war with a NATO member country, the entire force of NATO will come down onto the enemy.
Now on the surface, this sounds like a safe and sound idea: with more members, NATO will be even more powerful and the risks of deviation and war will be reduced. Except...... I am not sure if countries such as China, Russia, or even India will be happy about it. So what will they do?
If they cannot stop the movement, and if they do not want to be declared ‘defeated’ they are likely to create their own global alliance(s) with other countries. So before long, we will have 2-3 alliances roaming around the world and acting against ‘unfriendly’ nations in the name of the allied countries.
As I was mulling this idea I thought of the film Gangs of New York, which told a story about two rival gangs battling it out in New York just around the Civil War era. So if such a situation arises, we will see gangs of country alliances running around the world imposing their views of ‘justice’ and we will eventually be able to watch a film about the Gangs of Earth.
