My lifegivers, as I was roaming in the countrysides of this country called Austria, I got a message from Henry to rush back to Paris, because a major event turned the political landscape upside down. So I came back quickly and met him yesterday for lunch. He told me about the outcome of the European Union parliamentary elections and the dramatic rise of France’s extreme-right movement and how the president, Emmanuel Macron, dissolved the French parliament and called snap elections.
When I asked him for more details he mentioned, or I must say babbled, « immigration. ». At first, I did not understand what he was talking about, but as he delved further into the hot topic, I realized this is no different from the great balancing that happened on our planet in the aftermath of the great implosion, as people realized that the so-called unwanted immigrants, who were ostracized on our planet, were only an extension of what people in the richer countries had done to the immigrants’ ancestors and had walked away scot free from them.
I told the story to Henry. About how, after the great implosion, the whole planet got together, the rich countries accepted to submit to a review and judgement of their acts of pillage and violence towards other countries. At the end of the process, it came to light that the wealth the rich countries took from the ones they dominated, especially when adjusted for inflation over the 150 or so years, far exceeded anything the poorer immigrants had been accused of taking from the rich ones.
I also told him that the real achievement in this process was not the judgement or the acceptance of the accusations, but that the rich countries accepted the verdicts and undertook to pay the penalties. Furthermore, since the great implosion had wiped out most of the power-hungry corrupt leaders all over our planet, a settlement was reached in which the rich countries paid, over a couple of decades, the prejudice they had been convicted of, and the developing nations undertook to put the funds into good use and ensure their people’s eagerness to escape as migrants subsides. From that time onwards, we no longer talked about migrants, but citizens of the planet.
Henry asked me a few clarification questions such as why the power-hungry corrupt leaders were wiped out, and how we managed to not have corruption sneak in again, for he believes that capacity for corruption is at the foundation of a society of humans in which wealth and power define relevance.
Finally, he turned to me and said that he did not think such an event is likely to take place here on earth, for most of those rich countries either deny having done anything wrong, or confine their acts to the ‘crimes of the past’ that they have compensated the oppressed people for and have refrained from engaging in again. In other words, they claim the statute of limitations and that the prescriptive period have expired. Consequently, they will not accept any accusation for what they did 150 or 100 or even 70 years ago.
I told him that may be an issue, but just as many US states did with sexual assault, we can create a ‘lookback’ window, during which the statute of limitations would be suspended and even those with old, expired cases could come forward to sue. Such a setup would allow countries to lodge a complaint against oppressing countries even if the crime occurred 70, 100 or 150 years ago. In such a way, England would be accountable for its opium wars in China, and its colonization of India, or France for its actions in Haiti in the late 18th and 19th century, the US for its actions in Vietnam (blanket napalm bombing of rice fields and agent orange), not to mention dropping atomic bombs on Japan, or organizing insurgencies and regime change interference, and so on.
At this time we had finished our lunch and since I had already told him that I would pay for it, he got up, wished me good luck in my endeavor and shook my hand and left. As he was walking away, he waved his hand in the air and said : « I’ll buy you lunch the next time we meet on your planet !!!! »
