Not a day goes by without reading an article on the impact of AI on creative work. AI is feared to take over not only the standardized tasks and work, but also get into creative and intellectual output as well. It will thus put pressure on artists’ revenues, most of whom are not high earners to begin with. Furthermore, there will always be a portion of the population that will appreciate AI generated artistic work, be it creative writing, painting, or music writing.
This is a transformational situation, for it implies that the art market, or I should say the intellectual property (IP) generation market, can be entered by companies that would invest on technology to create artistic creations and automate story writing and art creation.
As a result of these fears and warnings, a portion of the population is asking for regulation, such as ‘no copyright possibilities for AI produced work’ and litteraly ‘no permission to display AI generated work’. I don’t know where all this will lead, but as an entertainment challenge, I looked into a curious question: compare cheating in sports with using AI to produce creative work.
First case : Have an AI produce a work and have it presented as the person’s work. This is the equivalent of having another person compete in your name. This is illegal, and uncommon these days.
Second case : Ask AI for opinion on your text, written by you, or hint about how to write or what to write about. But no specific writing by AI. This should be legal and legitimate, just like a coach or another athelete who will watch you and give you opinion on how to do better.
Finally, the third case : Have AI write something and then the person rephrases it and rewrites to improve it, or make it human drafted. To me this is just like doping in sports. And it is illegal.
I don’t know how far we will go with regulation, if anywhere at all, but I wonder if there will come a time when we will see a list of ‘prompts’ we cannot use in producing AI generated work, just as there are substances that get added regularly to the list of banned substances for atheletes.
